Multichannel

Multichannel describes a communication strategy where a business runs several channels in parallel — WhatsApp, email, SMS. The channels mostly operate independently: each has its own inbox and its own data.

What does multichannel mean?

Multichannel is the approach of being reachable across several communication paths at once. A multichannel business has a WhatsApp number, a support email address, maybe SMS, live chat, and phone — each tool standing on its own.

Multichannel is the older, simpler cousin of omnichannel. Where omnichannel promises a unified view across all channels, multichannel treats each channel as its own world.

Typical multichannel setup

  • WhatsApp is run by the support team in its own web interface.
  • Emails arrive in the info@ Outlook inbox.
  • SMS goes through a separate SMS gateway.
  • Live chat is a website widget with its own dashboard.
  • Calls go through a phone system whose data doesn't surface anywhere else.

Each channel has its own staff, its own metrics, its own data — and the customer notices: they have to repeat their order number because the WhatsApp agent can't see the email history.

Benefits of multichannel

  • Easy entry: Each channel can be introduced in isolation, no deep system integration required.
  • Specialization: Teams can focus on one channel, where the tools are often advanced.
  • Lower initial cost: No investment in a centralized platform needed.

Drawbacks of multichannel

  • Data silos: Every platform has its own truth. There is no unified customer view.
  • Duplicate work: Service requests sometimes get handled in two channels at once.
  • Inconsistent experience: The same customer hears different answers from WhatsApp and email.
  • Reporting problem: Cross-channel measurement of a customer's journey is hard.

When multichannel is enough

Multichannel isn't inherently bad — it suits situations where customers switch channels only once or where channels serve entirely different purposes. Classic example: an online store using email for order confirmations and WhatsApp purely for shipping updates. The moment customers start switching channels mid-flow ("I emailed yesterday, sending again via WhatsApp …"), the multichannel weaknesses show.

How SendSeven moves beyond multichannel

SendSeven is both multichannel and omnichannel: you can use the seven channels (WhatsApp, SMS, email, Telegram, Messenger, Instagram, live chat) individually or unite them in a single inbox — no data silos, with cross-channel contact history. The move from pure multichannel to true omnichannel happens without a platform migration.
