How the username key works

You set the key in WhatsApp settings. After that you can share your username freely, for example publicly under a post, without letting just anyone start a chat from it. Only people who also received the key from you can reach the first contact.

When it makes sense

The key is optional. For people with high visibility, or anyone who wants to avoid unwanted messages, it is a meaningful gain. If you want to stay as reachable as possible, leave it off. You can change either setting at any time.
