SMS Fallback
SMS fallback is the automatic delivery as SMS when an RCS message cannot be delivered. If a device or network has no RCS, the send switches to SMS, without the rich features but with full reach. The message arrives either way.
What is SMS fallback?
SMS fallback is the mechanism that automatically delivers an RCS message as an SMS when the recipient cannot receive RCS. This happens, for example, with older devices, mobile networks without RCS support, or when the feature is switched off. Instead of losing the message, the system falls back to the reliable SMS channel: without rich cards and buttons, but with the plain text and full reachability.
How SMS fallback works
The process is usually two-stage. First the system tries to deliver the message via RCS. If that fails, the fallback kicks in:
- RCS attempt: the system checks whether the recipient is RCS-capable and reachable, then sends the interactive message with all its rich features.
- SMS fallback: if that fails, the content is sent as a classic SMS. Interactive elements like rich media and suggested replies drop away; the core text remains.
- Transparency: ideally the sender can see which message was delivered over RCS and which over SMS.
Why SMS fallback matters
RCS is not yet available on every device or in every network. Without a fallback, some recipients would never receive a message at all. SMS, by contrast, works almost everywhere. The fallback therefore protects delivery rate and reach: the rich, interactive version goes out where it can, and the reliable text goes everywhere else. For a business this means a campaign reaches its full audience, instead of failing on the technology of individual devices.
