WhatsApp Broadcast
A WhatsApp Broadcast is a one-to-many message sent via the WhatsApp Business API simultaneously to many contacts. Each recipient receives the message as an individual private message – no recipient can see the other recipients.
What is a WhatsApp Broadcast?
A WhatsApp Broadcast (also called a mass message or bulk message) is a feature of the WhatsApp Business API that lets businesses send a single message to many contacts at once. Unlike WhatsApp groups, each recipient receives the message in their own private chat – they cannot see the other recipients or their replies.
This combination of mass reach and personal character explains WhatsApp's exceptionally high engagement figures: open rates of 98% (compared to 20–25% for email) and click-through rates of 45–60% are achievable in practice.
Requirements for WhatsApp Broadcasts
For broadcasts to be GDPR-compliant and policy-compliant, several conditions must be met:
- Opt-in is mandatory: Every recipient must have explicitly consented to receiving WhatsApp messages – documented, voluntary, and revocable at any time.
- Approved Message Templates: Broadcasts outside the 24-Hour Window require pre-approved message templates from Meta.
- Verified business number: Your company needs a verified WhatsApp Business API account.
- Sending limits: Meta limits the number of messages per hour based on your account's Quality Rating.
Typical Use Cases
WhatsApp Broadcasts are especially effective for:
- Marketing campaigns: Offers, flash sales, product launches to opt-in lists
- Transactional messages: Order confirmations, shipping status, delivery updates
- Appointment reminders: Medical practices, gyms, workshops
- Newsletters: Regular value-added content for subscribers
- Abandoned cart recovery: Reminders for forgotten shopping carts in e-commerce
- Re-engagement: Winning back inactive customers with targeted offers
Cost per Broadcast
Meta charges per conversation (24-hour window), not per individual message. For Germany, approximate rates in 2026 are: Marketing conversations cost around €0.1131, Utility messages around €0.0456. The first 1,000 Service conversations per month are free. A broadcast to 1,000 recipients therefore costs approximately €113 in Meta fees.
Segmentation: The Key to Success
The biggest danger with broadcasts is irrelevance. Sending the same message to all contacts risks opt-outs and a declining Quality Rating. Professional broadcast tools enable segmentation by purchase history, location, tags, interaction behavior, and custom fields – so only relevant recipients receive the message.
